The Best Exercise & Workout Plan for Menopause: What the Evidence Really Says

Discover why there’s no one-size-fits-all menopause training plan — and how evidence-based, individualised exercise can make the biggest difference.

Why you need to know about menopause and how movement can help!

Is there really a single "best" training plan for menopause? Or is the honest answer that there is no one-size-fits-all — and that our job as health and fitness professionals is to build an individualised, goal-orientated plan for every woman in front of us?

That question sits at the heart of our Menopause MOT® training, which puts the best available evidence directly into your hands so you can programme with confidence.

What the New ACSM Guidelines Say About Exercise and Menopause

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has recently  published its Position Stand, An Overview of Reviews for Resistance Training Prescription for Muscle Function,Hypertrophy, and Physical Performance.

ACSM guidance is the gold standard in exercise science — and this update strongly reinforces the evidence-based approach we teach across Menopause Movement®:

  • 💪 The biggest benefit comes from simply moving from "not doing it" to "doing it." Starting is what matters most.
  • 💪 Power matters as much as strength. With ageing and declining activity levels, speed of movement — not just load — becomes a key marker of physical performance.
  • 💪 One-size-fits-all prescriptions and overly advanced techniques are out. This is exactly where professional experience, motivation and enjoyment come in — we have the skill and confidence to help each woman work towards her individual goals.

It's genuinely reassuring to see the Menopause Movement® vision reinforced by the leading, most rigorously evidenced body in our field.

Summary of the ACSM Position Statement

1. Prioritise Consistency Over Complexity

The most significant improvements in muscle function, size and overall health come fromsimply transitioning from no exercise to any exercise. Individual variables can be fine-tuned later, but the primary goal for most adults isregular, consistent participation in resistance training.

2. Tailor Load and Volume to the Goal

Many styles of lifting work — but you can optimise results by matching load and volume to the specific outcome:

  • For strength: heavier loads (around 80% of one-repetition maximum), 2–3 sets per exercise.
  • For hypertrophy (muscle growth): higher weekly volume — roughly 10 sets per muscle group.
  • For power: moderate loads (30–70% 1RM), moving the weight as quickly as possible through the concentric (lifting) phase.

3. Individualise the Programme

The new guidelines explicitly move away from one-size-fits-all prescriptions. Programmes should be built around personal goals, enjoyment and safety —because a plan that's too demanding to sustain loses its effectiveness, no matter how "optimal" it looks on paper. Long-term adherence is the real measure of success.

4. Advanced Techniques Are Often Optional

Training to momentary muscle failure, choosing machines over free weights, and complex periodisation did not consistently improve outcomes for the average healthy adult. These tools have their place, but they are not prerequisites for results.

5. Nontraditional Training Is Highly Effective

You don't need a traditional gym setting to see results. The evidence shows that resistance bands, bodyweight exercises and home-based routines produce meaningful gains in strength, hypertrophy and physical function — a genuinely useful message for clients who train at home or have limited access to equipment.

Key Takeaways for Your Menopause Exercise Plan

  • Train all major muscle groups at least twice a week — this is the single most important step for musculoskeletal health through menopause.
  • Effort and consistency beat a "perfect" complex formula — whether you're using heavy barbells, resistance bands, or bodyweight alone.
  • Start at the right level, choose a method you enjoy, and progress the effort gradually over time.
